The new site offers a hand-picked selection of picture postcard, high altitude ski chalets, in some of the most popular resorts across the French Alps. Probing questions for Rhodri as TigerBay make an important decision

After expanding its team of travel software specialists and setting out its ambitious development plans for a new, industry leading, back-office system, it would be fair to say 2011 has already proved an eventful and productive one for TigerBay Software. Here, the company’s Managing Director, Rhodri Evans, answers many of the questions raised by friends and colleagues in the industry since the company’s successful exhibition earlier this year at the Travel Technology Show in London.

The UK travel technology market is quite crowded - what makes TigerBay different?

There are two things;
First, we are not just building a better back-office system.
The fundamental vision of TigerBay is to build web systems which are predominately consumer-driven, and propel the travel industry to where many other UK industries are. A great example is retail, the websites of Amazon and Tesco are not just shopping carts, they are powerful applications which drive both customer server and, crucially, revenue. That's what TigerBay has been doing for the past few years, capitalising on the modern customers high expectations of a website.
The second differentiator is technology. Internet-time moves very fast and the tools available to us now mean that we can leverage the experience of TigerBay to rapidly develop a new-age system far quicker than anything that has gone before.

You mentioned there the experience of the TigerBay team - How important is that?

The UK is littered with examples of companies that have tried to enter this market with new products that either took many years to complete or simply didn't work - and in some cases both. Their failing wasn't usually due to lack of resources, in many cases it was too many resources, very large teams and budgets. But what they lacked was experience of success.
TigerBay has only 4-5 people who are driving the system. But every one of them is hand-picked and has proven experience of delivering successful new product into the market. Having a really small team means that we can move very quickly, and that's not just an advantage over our competitors, it's critical because our clients demand it.

Until now TigerBay has built its website on top of existing back-office systems from other suppliers - is that changing?

Yes. We are building our own back-office system.

So that effectively propels you into the big-time, taking on Anite and Comtec?

That's an interesting question because we don't really see it that way.
TigerBay is a web systems company. Our goal is firstly to delivery increased income for our customers and then reduce overhead with really efficient back-office systems. But we achieve those goals in that order of priority, with increased income first, followed by efficient back-office.

When you say increased income, do you mean having an effective booking and SEO, those sorts of things?

Both of those are important, and we handle them both to a very high level. But we know that the Travel industry throws up a whole load of complications which are very different from other on-line transactions and sometimes that means subtle things are really   important. A great example is the sheer importance of the transaction. Buying a book will never have the same emotional value as buying a holiday - and interestingly, buying a honeymoon online takes the emotional commitment to a whole new level - so it's really important to use every opportunity to remind the customer exactly what they're about to purchase,  but without seeming to nag.
One of the areas where we're seeing a lot of work in is self-service. Initially our customers where interested in this as a cost-reduction tactic, but now it's seen as providing a far better means of customer support.

How does that work?

Well, some customers simply don't want to pick-up the phone to confirm administrative details, they are concerned that they might have to wait on hold and would actually prefer to use the internet at their own pace. That's a good example of how the internet is changing. If you go back ten years to the start of Amazon.com, the USP was price. A visit to Amazon today is an entirely personalised experience. Sure, you can still buy cheap books, buy you are just as likely to be offered specific technology or household products chosen by Amazon based on your previous browsing history. That sort of functionality is only possible because of internet technology, and it's using technology to drive income.

With all this focus on web systems, why are TigerBay building a back-office system at all? Why don't you just stick to building websites?

Because we're starting to reach the limits of what we can achieve using other suppliers’ technology. The "Internet Time" that I referred to before is relentless and our customers are demanding more and more. The existing systems are good and reliable, but we feel that we need to start breaking away from them if we are going to be able to deliver what the industry needs.

But won't that change TigerBay? Won't you lose the drive to deliver better internet solutions if you have a back-office system?

We don't think so. The back-office is a platform for us to build our systems onto. Don't get me wrong, we are building the very best back-office system that the UK has seen. But no Tour Operator will make a 6-figure investment in any system just because it has a really neat Flight Manifest or a super-fast invoicing system.

Does that mean that you see the back-office systems as a necessary evil?

No, I wouldn't go that far. Like I've said, back-office systems are critical to delivering efficient processes and reducing overheads. Also, in an increasing number of cases they will also provide customer service in entirely new ways.
We think that there is plenty of opportunity for innovation in the back-office too. Traditionally the areas of back-office which cause most frustration are the training overhead         and the flexibility of the system to adapt to the demands of new products, and in particular commercial changes for things like price reductions. So our intention is to build a back-office system which can be picked-up and used with the minimum of training and support. But, for most customers, it’s the website, not the back-office that's most important.

But surely that means it will be lacking in functionality, and not the heavyweight system that some of the larger Tour Operators need? Are you claiming to be able to do something no-one else has?

A few years ago that might have been true, but the changes in the internet are happening at such a pace that it’s now possible to build very functional systems that don't behave in an overly complex way. I've mentioned some examples already, including Amazon. Two other sites which have very simple approaches to usability are Facebook and Wordpress. I've also been impressed with Salesforce.com – it’s managed to change the model for providing enterprise (or business-strength) systems.
